About the Event
Winkfield Resource Centre will be hosting a Black History Month exhibition exploring and celebrating ‘Fashion and Identity’ in collaboration with Justwan Design Couture.
This event will feature a clothing exhibition, music and entertainment, networking, and a special film screening of ‘The Story Behind My Caribbean Cultural Style’.
The Story Behind My Caribbean Cultural Style' docu-film is a wonderful exploration of Creole Caribbean clothing made with Madras fabrics. In the docu-film, British born Jennifer Laurent-Smart shares the story of her family's migration to the UK and provides insight into her Caribbean heritage and how she expresses it through fashion. Jennifer is also joined by additional interviewees of Creole Caribbean heritage across generations who share some of their touching and insightful personal stories and views on the connection between cultural fashion and their identity. Featuring archive content, the documentary also explores the origin of Creole Caribbean traditional Madras clothing, its links to India, Africa, slavery, and its use today.
After the screening, you are invited to take part in a Q&A session with the film's producer and director, Candy Ellie Graham.
FREE ENTRY - NO BOOKING REQUIRED
This event is supported by Haringey Council.
